IE8 ISSUES

God help me, I just wrote my own WordPress plugin to (attempt to) compensate for the overwhelming crappiness of IE8.

What the plugin is intended to do is force your browser to load this site in IE7 compatibility mode.

Just FYI, this is not a WordPress problem. It is an IE8 problem. I strongly recommend using a real browser or, if you insist on sticking with IE8, fixing your settings (Tools > Compatibility View Settings > Display all websites in Compatibility View).

Regardless, in recognition of the fact that I am not the kind of person who can or should write code, please let me know if the plugin did or did not fix the problem.

  • I installed IE8 about 3 mos. ago. I haven't been able to read your writings for about a week, even with my compatability view on or off. All I could see was red. Whatever you did, welcome back.

  • er, comrade, check the stats. If Ed wants to reach the most people, he has NO choice.
Best Regards from someone running ie8 w/o issues….
Hate Bill Gates, if you want. It aint hurting him…

  • I normally use Chrome but just tried it out with IE8 (Win7). The white box in the middle of the page doesn't show up at all so the text is really hard to read over the red background image.

  • In yesterday's AJC, in the computer advice column, there was a letter saying a guy installed IE8 and could not read his business e-mail. His wife's computer had IE7, so he would use that to read his e-mails. We bought this confuser last winter and haven't updated the browser and that must be why we don't have a problem with reading your blog.

  • Well, Comrade PhysioProf, it's because some of us fuckwit cockdoucheweaselmonkeys running IE8 do the taxpayin' and the Web surfin' and the lovin' and the fightin' and the livin' and dyin' in this town!!!

But no, it still isn't fixed.

  • Here at work we're running IE 7, so I haven't had any problems with the absence of white space. I did just notice that all the side links have now disappeared. Has it been that way for a while?

  • Well, without resorting to egregious namecalling, might I point out the Firefox is Fucking FREE!

    Also, free of IE* Problems.

Side links show on the home page, do not show on views of individual posts.

    Cheers!

  • Ed,
Whatever you did it works just fine now on IE8 as far as I can see. I know it's fun to bash Microsoft stuff but alot of us just aren't into computers/applications that much to really care if it's MS IE8 (or 7, or 6 or …) we just buy the thing, take it hoem, plug it in and want it to work. Our priorities (wrongly or rightly) are directed toward other things in our lives. That said, THANK YOU very much for addressing this isue in very quick and competent manner.

  • Wow who knew so much completely unwarranted hatred toward MS was still out there.

IE8 Standards mode is, just that, standards compliant. If your site works in IE compatibility but NOT standards, you are not standards compliant. The only reason it works in Firefox is because Firefox's default rendering mode is more forgiving.

Remember, IE8 went full-on standards due to numerous complaints from website owners who wanted full-on standards. You reap what you sow.

    Whatever you did isn't working.

To force IE-7 rendering, put the following line in the HEAD:
    meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7"

(I'm not sure if your blog will EAT the GT/LT brackets, so i left them off)

  • I use Firefox and your smart quotes are all rendering to a bunch of garbage. I just fired up IE8 and it is the same. Please use dumb quotes and apostrophes or learn how to correctly code them in valid HTML please because neither Firefox or IE have any problem rendering correctly coded smart quotes.

  • Use the following codes (hoping wordpress won't do something funny).

    ‘ “ ’ ”
    ‘ “ ’ ”
