ANDREW SHIRVELL IS NOT GAY

NPF is canceled. Because of this. You must watch this. Must. Andrew Shirvell, the man behind this controversy (the video also provides some background) made the remarkably brilliant decision to give an interview to Anderson Cooper. I think he makes a great impression!

The important thing that we learn from this video is that Andrew Shirvell is not in the least bit gay. He is not gay like a Mardi Gras parade or a french horn solo or a meadow in springtime. The odds of him being arrested in an airport bathroom whilst servicing a transvestite are zero. It could never happen because he is not gay. His obsession with young, popular, successful, and handsome 21 year old gay man Chris Armstrong stems from his deep moral convictions and not from a latent desire to engage in sexual activities with other men.

I cannot be any clearer or more emphatic about the fact that Andrew Shirvell is not gay. Furthermore, Shirvell has convinced me that it is well within his 1st Amendment rights to do creepy shit like show up at Chris Armstrong's house, stalk his friends, or follow him around in public with a video camera. So feel free to let Andrew Shirvell (who is not gay) know how much you support his 1st Amendment rights as a private citizen who is not gay.

    I had two thoughts after watching this video. First, isn't this the same kind of obsession observed in the lead-up to Harvey Milk's assassination? I hope this kid's got a couple of bodyguards.

    Second, the AG of Michigan is named Mike Cox?! Why was I not made aware of this? Is the Governor named Hugh Jass? Is the Secretary of State named Amanda Huginkiss?

    The Lord moves in mysterious ways. Who is Andy to question God's plan? And if it just so happens that God has chosen to manifest as a student council president, why I suspect we'd hear quite the interesting annoyingly keening high-pitched and inchoate whining sound out of Andy as he got his rump roasted (&c), similar to what I just done heard in the interview.

    Most of the people I've known with Asperger's are not nearly as creepy as this guy, what with them not generally being creepy, and this guy being hella creepy. I think what happened was this guy was totally convinced he could make it through a 7 minute interview and win the hearts and minds of the public if he could just stay on his talking points, and dodge Anderson Cooper's attempts to do anything pesky like ask super-obvious questions that present him in a less than flattering light.

    Geez folks, I'm not a psychologist or psychiatrist, but this guy clearly doesn't have 100% ability to recognize social norms or process and act appropriately. Whether it's Asperger's or something else, he surely has a condition that has nothing to do per se with politics, Christianity, homophobia or whatever you're throwing at him.

    For the record, I am pretty sure (as the original post should have made clearer) that this guy is mentally unstable or something. But there's nothing more ridiculous than people diagnosing people with other things via the internet (Aspergers! Autism! Pleurisy! St. Vitus' Dance!). Why assume he has a legitimate illness? I've seen plenty of people who have turned out like this just from homeschooling and a good ol' indoctrination with Westboro Baptist-style Christian fundamentalism.

    Maybe he has a legitimate problem. Maybe he is just a fucking asshole who functions like a robot because he was brainwashed for 10 or 15 years.

    Think I'm with Kevin here…this is clearly someone with a social deficit, whether it's autism spectrum or something else -his speech patterns and odd bearing are very noticable. Remembering some other common Aspergers traits…odd hobbies or interests pursued with unusual focus or intensity…an inability to predict or understand how other people will view your actions (ie he is able to pass the bar exam, but apparently believed it would HELP him to go on TV….)

    At what point in the process does one look up, look around, and think 'whoa, I am off the beaten path here, and not in the good way'? I'm not finding this particularly amusing, as I keep remembering that these are real people, and not just funny pictures on my laptop screen. I remember being at university; I wasn't at all shy or withdrawn, quite the opposite, but if a government official at that level had directed that kind of concentrated, extended, downright OBSESSIVE attention at me and my doings – well, I would have found it most unpleasant, to say the least.

    And Mr. Shrivell does not really strike me as someone who is really enjoying his life right now, for that matter.

    I gotta say, while I'm thoroughly freaked out that what this guy is doing isn't enough to get him fired, I'm also incredibly disappointed in the tone of both your column, Ed, and most of these comments. We're making this about Shirvell being gay? Who gives a shit? It's about his appalling behavior. And in light of all the children committing suicide after bullying (particularly around the issue of homosexuality), it makes me a little sick that we're joining in, regardless of who's side we're really on.

    Isn't the point that all this bullying is a problem? Why perpetuate it? So disappointed, Ed. I love your usual stuff, and enjoy the laughs at hypocrisy and power. This tone of this one makes me sad.

    I can't speak to everyone else's motive but this reading seems almost entirely backwards. The problem with Shirvell, and the reason that he is a worthy subject of ridicule, is quite obviously not because he is gay. Rather it is because he has chosen to take out his anger, frustration and probable sexual confusion in an incredibly absurd, inappropriate and aggressively mean spirited way. To be frank, I think one would have to strain pretty hard to read the mockery on this board as you have. Obviously the commenters are not ridiculing Armstrong or Cooper for being gay after all. Shirvell's behavior demonstrates a person that profoundly lacks self awareness and that is what is ridiculous and somewhat humorous. The fact that the awareness he lacks is of his latent homosexuality is essentially beside the point.

    Also, "Something wrong with him" =/= something medically wrong with him. With all the respect due to your internet diagnoses (like Bill Frist diagnosing Terri Schiavo on YouTube, except he was at least a real doctor) none of you Asperger's experts have the slightest idea what this guy's deal is. Until proven otherwise, I'm going to continue working under the assumption that he's just a fucking asshole.

    Wide circulation of the criteria for diagnosing Asperger's is one of the most annoying things to happen to the internet in the last few years. Asperger's is a real medical condition. It's not something that people can self-diagnose (or project onto others) to explain the fact that someone has a horrible personality or no social skills.

    As for the way he talks, he was on a tape delay and for all you know he has a garden variety speech impediment. Mental illnesses are no different than any other, namely in the sense that you don't have the knowledge necessary to diagnose them.

    Andrew Shirvell proposed to me, multiple times! While he took me to NYC to a Broadway musical, then a Liza Minelli review then had a Cher lookalike deliver me the pink diamond in a heart shape he picked out for me, then took me to this hilarious show where all the men were dressed like girls. How fun was that? And a perfect ending to our engagement evening! He tucked me in to my special room he'd picked out just for me. JUST for me! All for myself! He's such a gentleman, then he went out for a couple of hours to hopefully find another surprise gift for me to tuck under my door so I could find it the next morning (but sadly no stores were open that late but he had fun looking!). Anyway, I can attest he's not gay, he's my fiance!

    If Shirvell, who's a public figure with a certain amount of political clout, essentially starts hatefully stalking and bullying a college kid because he's become personally obsessed, that's one thing. Classing his actions as "political" is absolutely nonsensical, especially since he says he's "protesting" not as a politician, but as a "private citizen" and as an alumnus of the university. Furthermore, even if they were political opponents campaigning for the same public office, the smear tactics he's using are very much not par for the course. It'd be like if Hillary Clinton's "late night phone call" ad had said, "my opponent is a big scary black man…who wants the keys to your house…so he can have sex with your teenage daughter!!!"

    However, if in fact he's partnered with a political group whose goal is to challenge the hate crime laws in court, that means that his actions ARE political although they are not directly related to his role as an assistant Attorney General. If the goal is to set up a case so that this group can establish a precedent wherein gays are prevented from using hate crime laws to protect themselves from stalkers and bullies, then Shirvell's actions are far, far more disturbing than if he were merely an unbalanced individual hate-stalking the target of his personal obsession.

    Second point. He seemed very methodically invested in this, but not emotionally invested at all. Anderson seemed more emotionally invested in his own arguments. I don't think Shirvell could be 'riled' to make a bigoted 'outburst'. So either he is on the spectrum and completely obsessed with the SB Prez, or he is methodially going at this with specific goals in mind as rickster aluded. I can't decide.

    BTW I have a son with ADHD/Aspergers…I'm not willing to chalk this guy's unprofessional behavior off to that. The guy was borderline belligerent and not the slightest bit aware that he might have crossed the line. He needs help.

    @Hazy – I think I and a lot of progressives love and embrace the gay community. To the extent that pointing out that someone is gay is done, it's usually done to underline the hypocrisy of a gay person (NOT Andrew) who demonizes the gay community (see also Ken Mehlman, Ted Haggard, etc).

    Similarly if someone were standing up at a KKK rally vociferously spewing hate-speech against blacks I think it would be ok to point out that they were black without it being a racist comment or in any way demeaning toward blacks in general.

    To be clear, I was on board with Ed's original post. And a lot of the comments.
    But some of them really did veer into ridiculing him for being gay.

    certainly like your web site however you have to check the spelling on several of your posts. Many of them are rife with spelling issues and I to find it very troublesome to inform the reality then again I will certainly come back again.
