I accept the fact that Gov. Lynch cannot appoint a Democrat to replace Judd Gregg and thus give the party a magic 60 in the Senate.
Gregg simply would not accept the Cabinet post without assurances that he will be replaced by a Republican. But why did Lynch apparently choose Bonnie Newman as Gregg's interim replacement? Newman is, by any stretch of the imagination, a competent Republican of the type that plays well in New Hampshire.
She will be a strong candidate in 2010.

I tend to agree, Nate. Granted I have not heard Newman's name for years, since back when she held a minor post in the Reagan administration. Regardless, nothing suggests that she is not a viable candidate.
It will sort itself out if there are a couple of major votes before the 2010 race heats up. If, for instance, there's a SC confirmation vote and she votes with James Inhofe then it's as likely as not that NH voters will put her out on her ass.

Ok, that's a bit of an excuse, but would you drop your life and show up for the Senate of The United States of America in about a few days? That's why the Senate and most elective offices are a rich person's game.
Think about the limitations of being a politician or office holder. You are beholden to who pays for you.
