In fact I have visited Rockford, and it is indeed a very depressing place. I'd have to say Detroit is the most depressing place though–or maybe it's just the most eerily haunting place since its beautiful architecture betrays a past glory and prosperity. But that time is gone! The downtown has sky scrapers abandoned but for a couple stories; empty downtown streets (give or take a couple of homeless peeps), and of course a magnificent, shiny-exteriored GM building that reflects the sunlight all day long while, ironically, no cars drive by.
