Just take the Reagan out past Naperville

From Chicagoist: As if living in the far west suburbs of Chicago wasn't already a degrading enough experience, Governor Blagojevich is renaming I-88 the Ronald Reagan Memorial Highway. The Gipper will join other famous Illinois superstars such as Adlai Stevenson and Dan Ryan in having a highway named after him.

"Now, when people drive on I-88, they'll remember Ronald Reagan and everything he did for our country," the governor said in a statement. "They'll remember his strength and convictions. They'll remember the way he restored our belief in the American dream.

For you non-Illinois people, I-88 goes from the western suburbs of Chicago to the Iowa state line. It's primary use is to get people to the mind-numbing sprawl of far west suburbs like Naperville.

It's widely considered one of the most depressing expressways to commute on in Chicagoland, and that's saying a lot.

  • Is it any wonder the newly named Reagan Highway drops you off just minutes from Ashcroft subdivisions? My shame knows no bounds.

  • Mike, you have erred in your labelling of 88 as one of Chicago's most depressing expressways.

You have sold this road short. In actuality, it is one of the most depressing highways in the world. In fact, I believe the Hillside Strangler to Aurora stretch ranks just behind the Mogadishu to Harare stretch of Strategic Road #7 in Somalia as the worst stretch of road on earth.

  • Doh! I forgot to mention that it's part of the strangler.

Maybe it's because I'm a south-sider and south-suburban kid growing up, but I can't describe to you how awful it is driving west on I-88. It just keeps going west. It just keeps going.

and going, and going. It's like "How many Targets, Best Buy's and Burger King's do you need? Can't you tighten this up just a little bit?" Looking out from the highway, it seems like at least 40% of the available ground is used for concrete parking.

And the crap just keeps going. Like chicago had the runs and it's all flowing west….

  • There's a Ronald Reagan Highway in Cincinnati.

It goes through every single Jewish neighborhood in this city.

I don't really know what that means. But it means something.

  • You know, an observer driving west on 88 would assume that, for instance, the people in Darien could drive 15 minutes to Oakbrook to buy furniture or go to Best Buy. But of course they can't, so they need their own Best Buy and dozen home furnishings store.

Say what you want about the density of the south side, at least there's a little space involved. Granted, I may eat those words when Orland-Frankfort-Mokena merge into one landmass, but for the time being at least a drive down 80 or 57 does not consist of fifty straight miles of pavement, strip malls, and 3 to 5 story C-1 zoned development.

  • I remember 88 astoundingly well. I am probably familiar with parts west that most people don't ever have reason to come across. This of course being due to my parents horrible residence in "unincorporated illinois" east of Dekalb four years ago.

First of all, 88 was the highway on which that enormous 78 ounce soda or whatever started to self destruct. Since there was no place for me to pull over I had to try and through it out the window. This off course resulted in about 75 ounces of Pepsi flying back into my hair and face.

Second, as much as you can complain about their being constant strip malls going west from Chicago, bare in mind that after you hit Dekalb there is nothing….I mean literally barely a thing. Untill you get to Iowa. It is like the desert or something, get gas before you go past Dekalb. More appropriately, just never drive that far on 88.

  • Wasn't US RT 14 (aka Northwest Highway, which ran right past my house in Arlington Heights) already renamed the Reagan Highway liek 10 years ago?
